Eritrean Foreign Ministry spokesman dismisses Ethiopian regime’s allegation as blatant lie

Asmara, 7 March 2007

A spokesman of the Eritrean ForeignMinistry dismissed as blatant lie the accusation by the TPLF regime alleging through media outlets yesterday that the British and French tourists who were abducted in Ethiopia last week had crossed into Eritrea by their abductors. Citing mutually contradictory statements issued by the regime that also point an accusing finger against Eritrea regarding the tourists abducted in Ethiopia, the spokesman underscored that such baseless accusation is designed to serve other sinister scheme. The spokesman further pointed out that the Eritrean government has been and continues to exchange what it deems relevant information with the countries mentioned that was obtained from village elders of the area, taking into consideration its human and moral obligation on

the one hand, and on the basis of the request for cooperation made by the British and French governments on the other. Whereas this is the actual state of affairs, the Foreign Ministry spokesman underlined that the TPLF regime instead of giving priority to saving the lives of peaceful civilians, its resort to blackmailing Eritrea and intending to use the sad event serve its hidden agenda clearly attest to the regime’s irresponsible and adventurous stance.

Egregio Direttore,

Le scrivo questa brevissima lettera in riferimento all’articolo, riguardante il paese che io rappresento, apparso sul Suo giornale del 5 marzo scorso, con il titolo - L’Etiopia: “I turisti rapiti da soldati eritrei”. Prima di tutto desidero fermamente ribadire quello che e’ stato prontamente affermato dalportavoce del mio Governo, vale a dire la completa estraneità dell’Eritrea da un fattocriminoso accaduto 35 km all’interno del territorio etiopico.

Inoltre, mantenendo la mia piena convinzione che i fatti a venire dimostreranno la reale dinamica dell’accaduto, come d’altronde sta già avvenendo, mi chiedo :

- considerando che il fatto sia accaduto in un territorio etiopico altamente sorvegliato

- considerando che esista una zona cuscinetto di 25 km all’interno del territorio eritreo sorvegliata da circa 2000 caschi blu, dove i militari eritrei non possono accedere senza essere notati ed opportunamente segnalati dai soldati dell’Onu;

- tenendo conto che si tratti di un ambiente naturale altrettanto ostile …,

come può un giornale serio come il Suo, limitarsi semplicemente ad esaltare un racconto immaginario di un rappresentante del regime etiopico piuttosto che domandarsi come sia stato oggettivamente possibile per i soldati eritrei realizzare un’operazione del genere?

Infine, trovo assolutamente mortificante che un giornale considerato tra i quotidiani italiani più importanti, per descrivere un fatto cosi delicato accaduto in una regione tra le più sensibili, si riduca a riprodurre una cartina dell’Eritrea che non merita nemmeno un commento. Pensando quindi di farLe cosa gradita, Le mando in allegato una cartina geografica dell’Eritrea.
